Koumas' maiden Wales goal helps earn draw with Ghana

Lewis Koumas scored his first international goal to salvage Wales a 1-1 draw with World Cup-bound Ghana in Cardiff.Substitute Caleb Yirenkyi delighted the noisy Ghanaian contingent after 66 minutes, converting from close range after the ball had stuck a post.Ghana fans greeted Yirenkyi's goal as if it was at the World Cup itself - possibly against group rivals England - rather than at a 33,000-capacity stadium which was around a third full. But Koumas, sent on as a substitute on the hour, spared Wales' blushes by nodding home a Neco Williams cross in the third minute of stoppage time.Daniel James had hit the post twice after Wales manager Craig Bellamy had pointed out the Dragons' dismal June record.Wales had lost seven of their previous 11 matches in the month of June, with only two wins. This friendly marked the 150th anniversary of the Football Association of Wales, which was formed at a Wrexham hotel in 1876, and the Dragons wore a plain red and white retro kit for the occasion. It was also the first time Wales had played African opponents on home soil, but there was something of a World Cup hangover after play-off heartbreak in March with empty seats galore.Bellamy sent out arguably the strongest XI available to him in the absence of injured duo Ben Davies and Harry Wilson.Ghana named Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo - who had a loan spell at nearby Newport earlier in his career - on the bench, while former Swansea striker Jordan Ayew wore the armband.Jonas Adjetey twice came to Ghana's rescue in the opening exchanges before James almost added to his 10 international goals.Lawrence Ati-Zigi made an excellent point-blank stop to push James' header against a post, and the Leeds winger then rattled the crossbar after Thomas Partey had blocked his first attempt.Ayew shot over wildly but Ghana had not presented any threat until Karl Darlow's pass to Joe Rodon fell short. The Leeds goalkeeper atoned for his aberration by smothering Ayew's attempt on the edge of his six-yard box.Ghana were growing into the contest and Williams took the sting out of Kamaldeen Sulemana's shot before Darlow was forced to tip over a Marvin Senaya volley that had deflected off Sorba Thomas. But the Black Stars were perhaps fortunate to still be at full strength, Partey having cynically brought down David Brooks after being cautioned for a similar challenge on James.Partey was unsurprisingly substituted at the half-time and Ghana survived when Gideon Mensah's careless touch rolled the ball inches wide. The Black Stars made the most of that escape after Williams tumbled and Swedish referee Oscar Johnson ignored penalty appeals.Ernest Nuamah burst through to force a fine diving stop from Darlow, but Yirenkyi was on hand to nudge the ball home.It looked as if that would condemn Wales to defeat but Koumas, who finished the domestic season by celebrating promotion to the Premier League with loan club Hull, joined his father Jason as an international goalscorer."With England set to face Ghana in the World Cup group stage, will Thomas Tuchel have felt any wiser about the challenge the Three Lions face on June 23?"International warm-up matches are often frustrating exercises for scouts and analysts."Managers are understandably reluctant to show their full hand with a major tournament around the corner, key players are protected, intensity levels fluctuate and tactical plans can remain firmly under wraps. This game fell firmly into that category."For large periods, Ghana looked a team with one eye on the bigger picture. They were second best for the opening hour as Wales controlled territory and possession, moving the ball through midfield with relative ease and limiting Ghana's attacking threat. It was hardly a performance that will have alarmed Tuchel or his coaching staff."Ghana's biggest attacking weapon, Semenyo, was left on the bench throughout as the management opted to preserve one of their most influential players ahead of the tournament. Any assessment of Ghana's attacking capabilities therefore came with a sizeable caveat attached."Without Semenyo, Ghana lacked a focal point capable of stretching Wales in behind. Ayew, now firmly into the veteran stage of his career, operated through the middle but struggled to provide the pace, physicality or penetration needed to trouble the Welsh backline. The attack often looked predictable and easy to contain."That changed when the bench was introduced."The arrivals of Nuamah and eventual goalscorer Yirenkyi injected life into Ghana's play. Wales, comfortable for much of the evening, found themselves pushed backwards more frequently."Yirenkyi's goal was reward for a much-improved final half-hour and offered a glimpse of what Ghana can become when their younger, more dynamic attackers are involved."

Man City sweep past Brighton in FA Cup final to complete domestic double

Man City sweep past Brighton in FA Cup final to complete domestic double

Manchester City completed the domestic double after beating Brighton 4-0 in the Women's FA Cup final at Wembley.Andree Jeglertz's side had already won the WSL this season - ironically clinched after Brighton drew 1-1 with Arsenal - and have now mirrored their success of 2016, when they last won the FA Cup and league titles. It was Man City's first visit to Wembley since 2022, when they lost to Chelsea in the same competition, while Brighton made history with their first major final appearance. The Seagulls began brightly too and offered some hope of causing an upset. Kiko Seike was the instigator, making penetrating runs down the right wing and also having a great shot that blazed over the bar.But once Man City began to click - and Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw was allowed onto the ball - they never looked back. The WSL Golden Boot winner inevitably opened things up too as she nodded home an Alex Greenwood cross.Brighton wanted a VAR review as Chiamaka Nnadozie went down. But the goalkeeper never had control of the ball and was beaten in the air by Shaw.Next it was the Man City captain Greenwood's chance to contribute. She sent in a low free-kick that beat Nnadozie at the near post, with the Seagulls stopper surely disappointed again to let another goal slip by her. With Man City in control, the second half was a quieter affair. They scored a cracking third as Shaw, Vivianne Miedema and Aoba Fujino combined, with the latter curling home a wonderful effort.Miedema finished things off late in the game with her own wonderful header, which Nnadozie could not keep out. Surprisingly, it is the first time the striker has won the FA Cup, having twice been a runner-up with Arsenal. It caps off a brilliant debut season for Jeglertz, and the first time Man City have lifted the FA Cup since 2020.Analysis from Sky Sports' Charlotte Marsh at Wembley:In the end, a pretty easy win for Man City. Brighton offered early hope and after their 3-2 win against the same opposition just a few weeks ago, will be disappointed to have not made bit more of a game of it.But despite the current heartache, this was still a landmark afternoon for a club that is improving year-on-year.This game can only serve as a target to reach again, and shows them what else they need to do to compete on a regular basis. The Seagulls have already shown glimpses of that, certainly in recent weeks.Brighton are a club that have wholeheartedly thrown their support behind not just their women's team, but women's football as a whole and will surely be back on the big stage before long. For Man City, it's another wonderful afternoon in a season of wonderful moments.Jeglertz has transformed this team from the almost-rans to the ones to beat. What a job he has done, but Shaw will rightly take the headlines. Those might have been stronger if she had decided to leave but after another match-winning turn, Man City will be beyond relieved to have her still in the ranks.Greenwood took the player of the match award at Wembley and played her part as well. It is her second FA Cup win after winning it with Man City in 2020.A nice moment for Miedema at the end too. She has missed recent matches for personal reasons, but a great goal in an FA Cup final caps off another great season from her on the pitch.

Arsenal suffer penalty heartbreak as PSG win Champions League final

Arsenal suffer penalty heartbreak as PSG win Champions League final

Arsenal suffered heartbreak in the Champions League final in Budapest as they were beaten 4-3 on penalties by PSG after a tense 1-1 draw in 120 minutes. It was set to be a historic evening for whoever won the coveted trophy - Arsenal looking for their first Champions League title 20 years on from their last final appearance, while PSG were aiming to defend the title they won last summer. The Gunners made the perfect start too as Kai Havertz powered home inside six minutes. Marquinhos' attempted clearance hit Martin Odegaard from close range, before landing into the path of the striker. His lung-busting run ended with a superb finish from a tight angle over the head of the kneeling Matvey Safonov. It was another goal for Havertz in a Champions League final after he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for Chelsea against Man City in 2021.Kai Havertz is only the third player to score for two different teams in a Champions League final (Chelsea, Arsenal), after Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd, Real Madrid) and Mario Mandzukic (Juventus, Bayern Munich). It was a defensive masterclass from Arsenal for much of the 120 minutes, with PSG's potent attack looking disjointed and void of ideas. They needed a penalty to level after a sloppy foul from Cristhian Mosquera on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, going into the back of the PSG forward and catching him on the calf. Ousmane Dembele fired home a beautiful strike from the spot. This is the first Champions League final to see both sides score since 2018 (Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool).PSG continued to see a raft of chances in normal time as tired legs allowed the game to open up. In extra-time too, Arsenal had a penalty appeal waved away in the first 15 minutes.Noni Madueke beat Nuno Mendes on the outside into the box, getting his body in front of the defender, before going down. Declan Rice had his arms in the air, as did the entire Arsenal bench - but the incident was not even reviewed, while Rice and Mikel Arteta were both yellow carded. The game then went to the lottery of penalties. Eberechi Eze missed the Gunners' second, but that was matched by a brilliant save from David Raya on the next spot-kick to keep out Mendes. The two teams continued to trade blows until Gabriel stepped up for Arsenal's fifth penalty - skying it into the jubilant PSG fans behind the goal.It was a horrible moment for a player who did not deserve it - the Gunners defender had been one of their best players at the Puskas Arena - as Arsenal fell short in Europe once again.Already thinking about the 2026/27 Premier League season? There's a World Cup to fit in first - follow live blogs of every game on the Sky Sports App - but the key dates are locked in for next term, when Sky Sports will once again show at least 215 live Premier League games.June 11: World Cup starts - day-by-day fixture listJune 14: Scotland's opener vs Haiti (2am)June 15: Summer transfer window opensJune 17: England's opener vs Croatia (9pm)June 19: Premier League fixtures released (10am)July 19: World Cup finalAugust 22-23: Premier League opening weekendAugust 27: Champions League league phase drawSeptember 1: Transfer Deadline Day (window closes at 11pm UK time)September 8-10: Champions League matchday 1May 30, 2027: Premier League final day

Scotland beat 10-man Curacao 4-1 in World Cup send-off match

A heavily-rotated Scotland eventually eased past 10-man Curacao 4-1 in their final match on home soil before heading off to the 2026 World Cup.New Rangers signing Lawrence Shankland netted a second-half double after his soon-to-be Ibrox team-mate Findlay Curtis scored his first international goal to equalise just before half-time following Curacao's shock opener, with Bournemouth's Ryan Christie adding a fourth late on from the penalty spot.Steve Clarke's side fly out to the United States on Sunday to compete in the tournament for the first time since 1998 but are sweating on the fitness of Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour who walked off injured in the first half.John McGinn, Scott McTominay, Lewis Ferguson, Kieran Tierney and Che Adams were given extra rest after playing for their clubs last weekend while Southampton striker Ross Stewart was managing a knee injury.Curacao, who are managed by 78-year-old former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat, are ranked 82nd in the world and will become the smallest nation in history to compete at the World Cup with a population of around 150,000.They are ranked one place higher than Haiti - who Scotland face in their opening group game in Boston on June 14 before matches against top 10 sides Morocco and Brazil. The visitors deservedly took the lead after 21 minutes when Sheffield United's Tahith Chong took the ball down on the halfway line before chopping inside John Souttar and reversing it in off the post from the edge of the box.World Cup 2026 schedule, dates and venuesScotland's World Cup fixtures and routes to finalScotland struggled to find their rhythm until they were handed a numerical advantage in the 38th minute when Curacao striker Jurgen Locadio was sent off for a late elbow on Aaron Hickey. However, Hampden gasped two minutes later as Gilmour went down clutching his knee after playing an unopposed 10-yard pass. The Napoli man was withdrawn and replaced by 19-year-old Curtis who made an immediate impact with his first and second touches. The first to set himself, the second to dispatch a low left-footed effort into the far corner for his first goal for his country.A rejuvenated Scotland returned for the second period as Shankland got his first of the afternoon just before the hour mark from a well-worked training ground set-piece.He then bagged his sixth international goal four minutes later after combining well with strike partner Lyndon Dykes before firing into the far corner.Teenager Curtis continued to impress off the left and provided the Scots their fourth and final goal when he was brought down in the box by Sherel Floranus.Shankland was already withdrawn so could not complete his hat-trick, but Christie stepped up to score his 10th international goal."Until the moment that Jurgen Locadia was sent off we really did well against a good Scotland team so after that I have seen a lot of good things but with 10 men it was going to be difficult."Plus, the fact that they scored to make it 1-1 almost at half-time. If you go in with a 1-0 lead at half-time then it is a little bit easier to accept that. In the second half we had to defend and try to keep the score low but what we saw in the first half, it was quite optimistic. We learned a lot.""If you are a good referee, you say 'take the player out and bring someone else in'. Now we have to wait and see what will happen for the World Cup. So that makes it a little bit difficult."

Republic of Ireland edge past Qatar in friendly as both sides end with 10

Captain Nathan Collins headed the Republic of Ireland to a 1-0 friendly victory over World Cup-bound Qatar as both sides were reduced to 10 men.Collins ensured Ireland got the better of a side managed by his former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui with an early header. However, just how the evening might have panned out had Jack Moylan not been dismissed as half-time approached, a sparse crowd inside the Aviva Stadium will never know.Heimir Hallgrimsson's side, whose hopes of making it to the World Cup finals were dashed in heartbreaking fashion in March when they lost their play-off semi-final to the Czech Republic on penalties, were in complete control until Moylan's premature exit.Qatar substitute Almoez Ali suffered the same fate 12 minutes from time. The game was played out against the backdrop of ongoing unease at the forthcoming Nations League clashes with Israel, and play was interrupted on several occasions during the first half as 'Stop the Game' protesters among a crowd of 28,981 repeatedly hurled tennis balls on to the pitch.Ireland will now head for Montreal and their friendly against World Cup co-hosts Canada on June 6, while Qatar continue their preparations for the finals - they launch their Group B campaign against Switzerland in San Francisco on June 13 - against El Salvador in Los Angeles on the same day.How the Republic of Ireland and Qatar lined upNot got Sky? Get instant access with no contractThe Republic took the lead with just five minutes gone when, having been fouled by Ayoub Al-Oui wide on the left, Moylan curled the resulting free-kick on to the head of Collins, who glanced the ball effortlessly past 'keeper Mahmoud Abunada. There was a brief interruption after the protesters made their presence felt for the first time as Qatar's Pedro Miguel underwent treatment for injury, but once order had been restored, Troy Parrott whipped a first-time shot wide after being picked out by Seamus Coleman. The Qataris simply could not get anywhere near Hallgrimsson's men and a mid-half drinks break did little to improve matters for the visitors with Abunada having to field Jayson Molumby's deflected 24th-minute shot from distance.Lopetegui could not hide his frustration on the sideline and only the bravery of defender Ahmed Fathi denied Chiedozie Ogbene a second goal as he attempted to latch on to Liam Scales' header back across goal. But the home side's night took a turn for the worse on the stroke of half-time when Northern Irish referee Jamie Robinson deemed Moylan's challenge on Jassem Gaber worthy of a red card, much to the Lincoln frontman's clear astonishment. With defender James Abankwah having replaced Dara O'Shea at half-time, the 10 men found themselves under pressure for the first time on their return, although Coleman very nearly caught Abunada off his line with an audacious 52nd-minute attempt from the right wing.Edmilson Junior dragged a long-range effort wide two minutes later after Molumby went down in midfield under Fathi's challenge and it took a fine 71st-minute reaction save by Caoimhin Kelleher - his first of the night - to keep out Yusuf Abdurisag's deflected shot. However, Qatari hopes of salvation were dashed with 12 minutes remaining when Ali struck out at Molumby off the ball on several occasions and was also sent off.
